Maestro Don trying to combat industry ‘fight’
His professional music career started five years ago, but Portmore-based deejay Maestro Don believes some industry players are trying to block his shine.
This 'fight' has inspired Leggo Di G, a BlakYaard-produced track that gives a testimonial account of his plight and how he combats it.
"The song title says it in a sense, 'cause dem need fi 'leggo di G' which is me," Maestro Don told THE STAR.
"Is a song weh me feel to me heart. A few gatekeepers who say they are gatekeepers are trying to hold back the G and they need to let him go."
The song will be featured in his music video medley to premiere next weekend, alongside another BlakYaad-produced track, Out. The entertainer hopes the visuals will help his current quest of increasing his visibility.
"Basically, fi this year and beyond, me waan get my face matched to the name, so I'm trying to give as much visuals as possible," he said. "Dah summer here is gonna be strictly promoting, a lot of visuals and appearances, just a push the brand."
This brand is supported by Gyptian, whose Ryte Dyrekshan label houses artistes, including Maestro Don. Despite the international affiliation, Maestro Don said that he still faces his fair share of struggles.
"The music change completely, so me actually become a man inna me career and still a go through the struggles," he said.
"I like having Gyptian as a mentor. Certain things him would mek me go through by myself fi experience it and see how me deal with it. And if me fall somewhere weh me feel like me stuck, him would come in and help. I usually say my musical journey has been bitter-sweet, but these days it's more sweet than bitter."
Fast Life, that was produced by KevStar Production, is one of his most recent releases, and he is finishing work on an EP dubbed Chasing Time. He said that it will showcase a more diverse and mature sound.
Maestro Don also shared plans for a Carib Voxx-filmed mini documentary which will chronicle his life.
