Rebuilding Norman Manley outclass Penwood
Host team Norman Manley High School turned in a polished display to outclass Penwood High 3-0 in their ISSA/WATA Manning Cup Zone D football encounter at Maxfield Park playing field yesterday.
The Maxfield Park-based institution, once a dominant force in schoolboy football during the late 1990s, secured victory through goals from Raynick Waisome, Hernando Henry, and Davine Dodd. Norman Manley, who last lifted the title in 2002 after earlier triumphs in 1996 and 2000, have now recorded back-to-back wins to open this season.
The school failed to advance beyond the group stage last year, but assistant coach Jahmoy Green believes this youthful group has the focus and determination to take the next step.
"We have a very young team and this is the same team from last year and they are coming on pretty well, so I just want them to stay focused and not get carried away," Green said. "We have collected six points from our first two games and that is massive for us."
He noted the progress made since last season, when the team managed just one victory.
"One must remember that we only won one game last year, and so we are right on track to do some great things this year. The first hurdle is to advance out of the zone and we will just take it from there because I know these boys are very talented and they also have the ability to do well this season," Green added.
"They are willing to learn and are putting in the work every day in training, and I am very proud of them. I know the sky's the limit for this team. We haven't won this competition for a very long time and everybody knows this, but I think we are building a very solid team for the future and hopefully we will be on top in the near future."
In the zone's other game Campion College, who made it to the quarter-finals last season, recorded a hard-fought 1-0 win over Papine. Campion are now on six points from two matches in the zone.
In the meantime, Calabar High recorded a big 6-0 victory over Pembroke Hall in their Zone E encounter at Excelsior High School. The victory was Calabar's first of the season from two matches.
